Weighing more than 1,380 tonnes and standing more than 54 metres high at completion, the new shiploader has taken 18 months to complete and when installed and operational will boost coal loading capacity at the Abbot Point terminal to a peak average rate of 7,200 tonnes per hour.
Involving the supply, fabrication, erection and commissioning of the new structure and tripper assembly, the project was wholly completed in Brisbane utilising John Holland’s Richlands fabrication workshop.
“The successful completion of this project reflects John Holland’s capabilities in the delivery of major resources infrastructure expansion projects and highlights the value and efficiency of our construction solution,” said Glenn Palin, John Holland’s group managing director.
“The project demonstrates the engineering excellence and technical skill within our specialist Energy & Resources business and is another example of the diversity of work being undertaken by John Holland in Queensland,” Palin said.
Brendan Petersen, general manager of John Holland’s Energy & Resources business said the completed project not only showcases the engineering capabilities within John Holland, but the skill and capacity within Queensland’s broader manufacturing sector. “This project has been delivered on time and on budget utilising resources available in Queensland’s manufacturing sector. Today’s milestone further strengthens John Holland’s position as the leading deliver of port expansion and marine construction projects in Australia; the project team is to be congratulated for exceeding our delivery and safety targets and completing this complex project in a contracted timeframe.”
“We are proud to have delivered this project on behalf of North Queensland Bulk Ports and are pleased that this important piece of infrastructure has provided jobs and a range of other support to local Queensland communities and companies,” Petersen said.
The X50 SL2 Shiploader construction contract forms part of a $287 million dual contract awarded to John Holland by North Queensland Bulk Ports in August 2008. In addition to the new shiploader, the Abbot Point X50 Expansion Marine Works contract has seen John Holland construct a second 500 metre long berth and associated jetty conveyor and transfer tower which will further expand export capacity at the Abbot Point terminal.
